BANGLADESH

Surrounded by India, except for a small border with Myanmar in the southeast, Bangladesh is a low-lying land traversed by the many branches and tributaries of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. With a population of over 150 million, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with nearly 1,000 people per square kilometer. Tropical monsoons, frequent floods and cyclones inflict heavy damage annually to this impoverished nation. Over a third of the population is under the age of 18 and almost seven million children between five and 14 have to work to help their families survive.

While Bangladesh has made significant progress in addressing national health and education challenges over the past three decades of its independence, the country remains one of the world’s poorest; indicators place it amongst the least developed countries.

By the Numbers:
Population- 156,050,883
Size: Slightly bigger than New York State
53% of the population over age 15 is illiterate
45% of the population lives below the poverty line
41% of children under five suffer from malnourishment
